I have sliding doors that open to the front of my home. At night, to lock the door before heading to bed, I must put the key in and turn, just like I would from the outside. The hook lock engages and the sliding doors are adjoined. The lock is a bit tricky and many times it has taken me much effort before success. The other morning was different. After waking up I went to unlock and open the doors. 1 try, nope, 2 tries, nope, 43 tries, nope. After roughly 17 minutes of failure. I called the landlady. No answer. It was 6:48 in the morning. I called a friend who had previously lived in this home and he stopped by on his way to work. I slipped the key underneath. I was prepared to feel like a fool and that the doors would easily open. They did not. He also tried calling the landlady. No answer. As he left, having to get to school, he fortunately ran into the landlady’s sister. The landlady arrived, brother in tow, but still the doors remained secure. I had already broken off a handle foolishly trying to pull the doors apart, preferring to break the lock rather than been seen as incompetent. The brother ended up getting a saw and going to work. He sawed and sawed between the sliding doors and after 16 minutes and 49 seconds the door was opened and the lock sawed in half. Free at last, Free at last, thank god almighty I am free at last. I have a new lock now.
There is a street food stall near my home and I have stopped there a few times. It sells delicious barbecued pork and chicken. You pick out a slab of meat and they chop it up for you and put it in a clear plastic and you bring it on home. Last night was my second night in a row. The meats were priced differently, from 25 baht to 45 baht for a slab. Apparently, as I was told by another patron of the establishment, the 35 baht pieces are pig ear. But if you really want to splurge, the 45 baht are the pig tongue. I got a little of the 25 baht slab, regular meat and a little baggie with some ear. It was rather fatty but the cartilage was tough.
The photographs show how you get the food. This is not the pig ear, just some curry, chicken and rice. The food is always served, for takeout, in these plastic bags.
